Biography
Marsha Hunt, who was a big name at MGM and Paramount in the 1930s but was blacklisted in her 50s due to Sen. Eugene McCarthy’s Communist Witch Hunt, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 104.
Documentary filmmaker Roger Memo, who directed a film about Hunt’s life, verified the news to THR.
Former model Hunt starred in several notable films, including the 1937 John Wayne western “Born to the West,” the 1939 Lana Turner vehicle “The Glamor Girls,” the 1940 adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice,” and the 1948 classic noir “Raw Deal.” As early as 1945, she was serving on the SAG board.
However, she had her career uncovered when she and her second husband, screenwriter Robert Presnell Jr., joined a Hollywood group that questioned McCarthy’s efforts to seek out Communists in American society, including Hollywood.
After being recognized as a probable communist by the right-wing journal Red Channels in 1950, he was urged to publicly disavow his activities before the publication would consider hiring him for future assignments, but he declined.
Hunt was blacklisted by major studios but still found work in television, appearing in episodes of shows like “Gunsmoke,” “The Twilight Zone,” “My Three Sons,” and even “Murder, She Wrote” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation” years later. A noteworthy film role did come her way by 1971, when she played the mother of a quadriplegic character played by Timothy Bottoms in “Johnny Got His Gun,” a film written by another Hollywood blacklister, Dalton Trumbo.
She was also quite active in leftist politics. Her passion for international welfare led her to the United Nations after she visited there in 1955. She has evolved into a social justice advocate over the years, working to alleviate concerns like homelessness, global pollution, and international poverty.
Over the succeeding decades, she devoted herself more and more to helping others. However, she continued to work in film and television with roles in films like Johnny Got His Gun (1971) and TV shows like Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Hunt advocated for a variety of humanitarian causes, including ending world hunger, building more shelters for the homeless, legalizing same-sex marriage, and raising awareness about the climate disaster.
Hunt arrived to Sherman Oaks in 1946 and has been serving as its honorary mayor since 1983.
Presnell, her husband of four decades, passed away at the age of 71 in 1986.
Her nieces and nephews include the actor and filmmaker Allan Hunt.
